1. POKOT SOUTH CONSTITUENCY PROFILE

a. Population size
Pokot South Constituency (132) is an electoral Constituency in Kenya. It is one of the four Constituencies in West Pokot County (024). The Constituency was established after a split of the larger Sigor Constituency in 2010, with the new demarcation of constituencies by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). The Current Member of Parliament for Pokot South Constituency is Hon. David Pkosing who was elected on a Jubilee Party ticket.
The Constituency borders Sigor Constituency to the East, Kapenguria Constituency to the North and West, and Elgeyo-Marakwet County/Marakwet East Constituency to the South and covers approximately 1,284sq kms

b. Political units
The constituency has two sub counties; Pokot South Sub county and Kipkomo Sub county with a total area of approximately 1,302.3 Sq. Km. It has four electoral wards namely; Chepareria, Batei. Tapach and Lelan.

c. Demography
In total the constituency boosts a population of 183, 294 people (Kenya population and housing census, 2019). The poverty level stands at 69.7% of the total population with a life expectance of 58 and 61 years for males and female respectively.

d. Economic activities
The constituency can majorly be divided into two;
I. The high land region which has a fair rainfall pattern. The inhabitants practice;
a. Agriculture: pyrethrum growing, sweet potatoes and some horticultural.
b. Animal husbandry: Dairy farming, and Merino sheep keeping.
II. The low land region which is semi-arid, experiences short and very low rainfall that barely supports any farming. The main economic activity is indigenous cattle, sheep and goat rearing making it a highly pastoral land. The poverty level stands at 69.4% of the population with a life expectance of 58 and 48 for female and male respectively.

e. Topographical features.
The constituency is characterized by a variety of topographic features. 80% 0f the constituency is hilly with a corrugated terrain. The highest point is at Chepkotet in Tapach ward at 3773 m above sea level.
